Progression Under the Microscope – Can Basic Science Provide the Link Between Structural and Functional Deterioration? Mechanisms of Progression in Glaucoma

چکیده
Mechanisms of Progression in Glaucoma Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease characterised by progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) over time with associated progressive visual field loss. Elevated intraocular pressure is the strongest risk factor for glaucoma, but the mechanisms by which damage occurs in the disease remain incompletely understood; however, a number of important principles have been established. First, there is strong evidence that the optic nerve head is an important site of injury. Characteristic optic nerve changes are observed in glaucoma and correlate with the pattern of visual field loss. Glaucomatous visual field defects often pertain to the horizontal mid-line and such a pattern would be difficult to explain if the site of injury were predominantly to the RGC bodies in the retina. The arcuate nature of many field defects observed in glaucoma also suggests the optic nerve head as the site of injury. In addition to such clinical evidence, recent basic science studies have pointed to the lamina cribrosa region of the optic nerve as a major site of injury in the disease.

Introduction: Epigenetics involves the study of heritable changes in the regulation of gene activity and expression that are not dependent on gene sequence. Main mechanisms of epigenetic modifications are DNA methylation, Histone modification and Nucleosome positioning. Several studies have shown that these modifications are related to cancer initiation, progression or tumor metastasis. In cont...
متن کاملThe Role of Structure in the Aesthetic Creation of Architectural Space
: One of the tools for the architectural advent form is the structure, while architecture and structures, particularly in our sociable Iran, are separated from each other. Most successful buildings have dominating designers who are proficient in structural issues and have a comprehension of the structural system's behavior. The extent of attention to the structure of the building will inevitabl...
متن کاملCrosstalk between Tumor Cells and Immune System Leads to Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition Induction and Breast Cancer Progression
Herein, we review the current findings of how a variety of accessory cells could participate in shaping the tumor microenvironment and supporting the mechanisms by which cancer cells undertake the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). EMT, a complex of phenotypic changes, promotes cancer cell invasion and creates resistance to chemotherapies. Among the accessory cells present in the EMT, imm...
متن کاملModelling Tumor-induced Angiogenesis: Combination of Stochastic Sprout Spacing and Sprout Progression
Background: Angiogenesis initiated by cancerous cells is the process by which new blood vessels are formed to enhance oxygenation and growth of tumor. Objective: In this paper, we present a new multiscale mathematical model for the formation of a vascular network in tumor angiogenesis process. Methods: Our model couples an improved sprout spacing model as a stochastic mathematical model of spro...
